Autism Behavioral Therapy

Autism behavioural therapy helps autistic children, teens and adults build the skills they need for everyday life, and reduces behaviour that causes harm or makes daily life harder. We deliver it through ABA therapy and Positive Behaviour Support, at home, at school and in the community.

Helping Hands Behaviour Support (HHBS) is an NDIS-registered provider. We work with NDIA-managed, plan-managed and self-managed plans across Melbourne’s north, west, east and south-east.

What is behavioural therapy?

Behavioural therapy uses what we know about learning and behaviour to teach new skills and change what’s around a person, so daily life gets easier. It starts with one question: what is this behaviour doing for the person?

Hitting, running off or refusing a task usually has a reason. It might be a way to escape a noisy room, ask for help, get a break or meet a sensory need. Once we understand the reason, we can teach a safer or easier way to meet the same need, and adjust the routine, the setting or how people respond.

Our goals are practical and specific to each person. For one person that’s asking for a break instead of screaming. For another it’s getting through the morning routine, or coping when plans change.

Types of Autism

Who we work with

We provide behavioural therapy for:

  • Autistic children, including young children through early childhood intervention
  • Autistic teens who are finding school, friendships or change hard
  • Autistic adults, including people living in supported independent living (SIL)
  • People with a Level 2 autism diagnosis and others who need more structured support

How our behavioural therapy works

  • Understanding the behaviour. A functional behaviour assessment tells us when a behaviour happens, what comes just before it and what it achieves for the person.
  • Teaching new skills. We teach replacement skills, such as communication, waiting, coping with change and daily living tasks, and reinforce them so they become easier to use.
  • Changing what’s around the person. Small changes to routines, spaces and the way others respond often make the biggest difference.
  • Coaching families and carers. We show parents, carers and support workers what to do, so strategies carry over into everyday life.
  • Tracking progress. We take data and share it with you, and change the approach when the data says something isn’t working.
